The Lunar University Declaration
We call upon the citizens of all nations to support the establishment of the Lunar University.
WE, THE UNDERSIGNED, DECLARE:
That continued space exploration and development have the potential to enhance humanity’s knowledge, self-understanding, prosperity, and common purpose;
That all efforts to exploit and develop the solar system’s resources must learn from the mistakes of the past and reject any practice which would deepen conflict and inequities on Earth, stoke military competition, damage ecosystems or degrade landscapes on other celestial bodies, or prioritize short-term profits over long-term sustainability;
That the equitable and sustainable development of a spacefaring, multiplanetary society will demand exceptionally innovative, experiential higher education, on Earth and in off-world settings, in the arts, the humanities, and the social sciences as well as in science, technology, and engineering, and the cross-disciplinary integration of all of these fields; and
That each human habitation on the Moon should include, from the very beginning, physical infrastructure which is dedicated to such higher education.
ACCORDINGLY,
We call upon the citizens of all nations to support the establishment of the Lunar University. As the first educational institution with a permanent presence on another celestial body, the Lunar University will be guided by the following core values:
Cross-Disciplinary Education and Innovation:The Lunar University will strive to shine as a beacon of academic excellence and to contribute to the equitable and sustainable development of a spacefaring, multiplanetary society. The Lunar University will embrace the full spectrum of human knowledge and experience to enrich life on Earth and deepen our understanding of space. It will emphasize experiential learning, cross-disciplinary education and research, and innovation.
International Solidarity and Inclusivity: The multiplanetary destiny of our species can be realized only if we become multiplanetary together. The Lunar University will exemplify international solidarity, inviting participation from countries regardless of their level of economic development or spacefaring capabilities. The Lunar University will reflect the full diversity of the human family, welcoming persons of all backgrounds, including those from historically underrepresented and marginalized communities.
Interdependent Independence: The Lunar University will depend upon grassroots support from individuals, civil society organizations, and other contributors from around the Earth. It will avoid becoming dependent upon, or beholden to, any single corporation, government, university, billionaire, or narrow consortium thereof. The Lunar University will operate as a not-for-profit institution committed to benefiting humanity as a whole. Its diverse, representative leadership will reflect this commitment.
Environmental Stewardship: All activities will adhere to principles of environmental stewardship and sustainability. Lunar resources will be used responsibly, with a commitment to preserving the lunar environment. The Lunar University will spearhead the formulation and promotion of ethical practices for space exploration and development.
